We’re pleased to announce the second episode of “Crosscurrents Conversations,” our new series on YouTube celebrating the rich natural and human history of Southwest Wisconsin. This episode features highlights from Casey Brown’s sold-out presentations of “Shuffling Many Worlds: How Being Ho-Chunk is Modern” in September 2025.
While Casey’s presentation touched on a wide range of topics–from the determination of the Ho-Chunk people to remain in their ancestral lands despite forced removals, to the artist Truman Lowe, to Ho-Chunk Speckled corn–the topic that stimulated the most interest was the region’s effigy mounds. Our highlights focus on Casey’s efforts with filmmaker Julia Pello to create a documentary from a Ho-Chunk perspective on the mounds in the Driftless area. Along the way, Casey provides insights on the significance of the mounds, the importance of oral histories, and how to honor and respect our pasts while living in an ever changing world.
We hope you will enjoy this video, share it with others, and subscribe to our YouTube channel. We’d also like to pass on a book recommendation that Casey made for those who would like to learn more about the intertwined histories of Native and Euro-American peoples: The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History by Ned Blackhawk.
We’re honored to welcome Casey back to Crosscurrents Heritage Center twice in 2026–once in the spring and once in the fall. Stay tuned to our website and subscribe (if you haven’t already) to be the first to learn about upcoming community events.
